Mike ‘Gibby-Siz’ Gibson is a self-taught property artist, topiarist, and entrepreneur, who has spent 30 years beautifying residential, commercial, and public spaces.

Inspired by hardworking Black artists like his father, Michael T. Gibson, and Topiary Artists Pearl Fryar and Jake Hobson, Gibson began honing his craft at the early age of seven. As a small child, Gibson took exceptional pride in the landscaping of his family home, which led him to complete jobs for other families in the neighborhood. Unlike many children his age, Gibson viewed each home as a blank canvas, with unlimited potential for beauty and art.

In 2012, after spending years pursuing his passion as a “side hustle”, Gibson officially discovered topiary and talented black artist Pearl Fryar with the help and support of his father. From that day on, Gibson became intensely focused on learning and perfecting his topiary skills considering himself a Property Artist, even returning to his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio with a mission to beautify the community one property at a time. Being ambidextrous like Johnny Depp in the classic movie Edward Scissorhands, he was given the nickname, Gibby Scissorhands; “Gibby-Siz” for short.

Mike Gibson would eventually start Gibson Works Property Art (GWPA), LLC in 2015 which focuses on enhancing the curb-appeal of a property, whether residential or commercial, by specializing in creating and maintaining topiary designs. Since inception, Gibson has created well over 600 topiary designs for properties nationwide, including spaces in Ohio, Texas, North Carolina, Florida, South Carolina and New York. He has been a presenter at Home and Garden shows, as well as performed numerous workshops at prestigious institutions. In 2017 GWPA won the Beautification Watch Award from Youngstown CityScape for their exemplary work helping to beautify the community. The following year Gibson was appointed the Artist of the Year for Mill Creek MetroParks Fellows Riverside Gardens 60th anniversary, and became the artist-in-residence with his “A Diamond in the Rough” exhibit showcasing 10 storytelling topiary sculptures which have since been adopted into the collection of the garden.

2021 was a breakout year for Gibson, where he was a featured contestant on the HGTV produced reality tv competition show "Clipped" featuring Martha Stewart as head judge. He later that year had the opportunity of a lifetime to become the Topiary-Artist-in-Residence at Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden in Bishopville, SC, where he helped to restore the legendary garden. In 2023, Gibson was awarded as a Garden Scholar from the American Public Garden Association Annual Conference. Gibson holds certifications as a SC Certified Landscape Professional, CPTED, Intro to Therapeutic Horticulture, and Trees, Shrubs, and Conifers: Identification and Use. He currently travels the country, educating communities on the therapeutic benefits of topiary with his engaging lectures, captivating demonstrations, and transformative topiary therapy workshops. Gibson resides in Columbia, SC with his beautiful wife Brittanny and topiary artist in training daughter Paisley.
